Bar Codes: Playing Well With Others
Bar codes are instrumental in helping other
technologies work better
People tend to think of bar codes as
"old" technology simply because it's been around so long. And, yes,
bar codes have been in general use for nearly 35 years -- since before the
advent of the first personal computer -- and everyone knows how old fashioned a
personal computer from the 1980s is.
So in many respects, bar codes are rather
"old fashioned". In other respects, however, they're even more
relevant today than they have ever been -- and they're fundamental to many of
today's cutting edge applications.
While there is an obvious trend towards
consumer-facing applications, there are some distinct business applications as
