Bar Codes: Changes Coming for Healthcare

Bert Moore
Editor

The FDA has finalized its updated guidance on bar code labels. But there's more.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued its substantially updated "Guidance for Industry Bar Code Label Requirements -- Questions and Answers" which was originally published in April 2006. The August 2011 edition contains a revised answer to Question 12 as well as seven new Questions & Answers pertaining to machine-readable label requirements for blood and blood components.

An unrelated but equally important publication will soon be forthcoming from the Healthcare Distribution Management Association (HDMA), the national association representing primary healthcare distributors. HDMA is preparing to publish an updated bar code labeling guideline that addresses significant changes that will be made to pharmaceutical case-level product identification and shipping labels within the healthcare distribution channel.

Publication date: August 2011
