RFID: Online Insecurity

Bert Moore

With recent reports of data skimming from RFID-enabled financial transaction cards, two things are clear: first, aluminum foil sales are going to skyrocket and second, some online vendors have a lot of work to do.

Without question, stolen financial transaction card data -- whether obtained by high-tech means or old-fashioned pencil and paper -- is a nightmare for the victim. Credit card companies have tried to combat this with security codes, additional verification codes and back-end checks to ensure that goods ordered online or over the phone are being ordered by the card holder.

But a recent test showed that some vendors are not as scrupulous about ensuring legitimate transactions. And that's where the real work needs to be done.
