RFID: A Health(care)-conscious Technology
The growing use of RFID in healthcare settings offers both opportunities
Novel applications of RFID in healthcare seem to pop up
every month. Two of these applications bear mentioning: thin RFID tags that
monitor temperature and other metrics that can be applied as easily as an
adhesive bandage (but without the adhesive) and development of remote
monitoring devices that allow patients to get out of bed and walk around.
From patient wrist bands and doctor/patient ID badges to
identify and locate individuals in the hospital, to RFID on medications to
ensure patient safety, to RFID on surgical sponges to ensure none are left in
the patient, to real time locating systems for moveable assets to improve
patient care, RFID is becoming a key technology in today's healthcare
That's one reason AIM's RFID Experts Group (REG) Healthcare
Initiative (HCI) is so important.
