RFID: Gauging the Privacy Impact

Bert Moore
Editor

It may seem like an oxymoron but privacy is everyone's business. How do you make sure your RFID implementation isn't at risk of "leaking" personal data?

There has been a lot of talk -- and even strongly suggested in the European Union -- about performing privacy assessments for RFID systems but, until now, there has been little generally available guidance on how to conduct a privacy assessment or what to include. Admittedly, there are privacy professionals who make this their business and who can (and do) help companies make informed decisions about RFID implementations to ensure that only relevant personally identifiable information (PII) is collected and secured.

Now, however, GS1 has produced a Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA) tool to help companies perform their own privacy assessments. What is most significant is that this tool could serve as the basis for a globally consistent method for performing assessments -- something that is essential in today's interconnected, global economy.
